Britons 'do Christmas shopping abroad'

Millions of Britons are set to travel abroad in the next ten days in order to do their Christmas shopping, according to experts.

Cater Allen Private Bank stated that 2.2 million people from the UK were set to visit countries such as France in order to take advantage of favourable exchange rates.

The country has become much more accessible since the recent introduction of a high-speed rail link between London and Paris, making it one of the most popular destinations for Christmas shoppers.

Consumers were said to be likely to spend about £263 million collectively on presents while overseas.

Commenting on the figures, Sally Ann Watts of Cater Allen said: "Clearly the strong pound is having a real impact on shoppers and many are heading abroad to find a bargain this Christmas."

However, the Post Office has recently advised people travelling abroad not to be caught out by hidden charges on their credit card.

The organisation said that consumers needed to check whether they would have to pay a fee while outside of the UK before leaving the country.
