Britain calls for closer links with Turkey

The UK government has highlighted the importance of developing closer links with Turkey.

Foreign secretary David Miliband said that greater cooperation with Turkey was "pivotal" for the EU, as it could help solve problems beyond its borders.

Turkey is currently negotiating to join the EU, which could encourage foreign investment in the country.

Speaking to BBC Radio 4's The World Tonight, he said: "It is an important part of our drive for an outward looking Britain, but also an outward looking and safe EU that we have institutional relations with countries like Turkey."

Mr Miliband added that closer links would also lead to greater collaboration on security and political issues.

Last month, a general election was held in Turkey and was won by Justice and Development party candidate Abdullah Gul.

After winning the election, Mr Gul said he was committed to being involved with the EU.
