Brazilian beaches 'best in the world'

Brazil's status as a paradise for beach-lovers has been confirmed in a new list of the world's best beaches.

Compiled by Conde Nast Traveller, the chart contains two Brazilian beaches in the top ten, with the Copacabana rated at number five and Ipanema at number eight.

Described as the world's best "metropolitan beach", Copacabana's 4.5-kilometre stretch of sand in Rio de Janeiro is "the perfect place to do some serious people watching", according to the publication.

Also located in Rio, Ipanema is "more stylish and chic" than its more famous counterpart, with residents of the city's exclusive neighbourhoods often heading there to soak up the sun.

For those who wish to explore further, there are several other beaches in and around Rio, including Pepino, Barra da Tijuca, Flamengo and Arpoador.

Now established as a holiday destination, Brazil's overseas property sector is beginning to develop rapidly as more investors recognise the strong fundamentals of the market.

British Olympic hero and BBC Sports Personality of the Year Chris Hoy recently acquired a beach-side property in Brazil.
