Brazil 'will benefit from World Cup'

Brazil is set to experience a number of long-term benefits from the forthcoming World Cup in 2014, according to a leading official.

Tourism minister Marta Suplicy stated that a range of new developments would be created across the country ahead of the tournament, reports Xinhua.

Speaking at the National Meeting of Architecture and Engineering in Sao Paulo, she said Brazil would benefit from projects such as infrastructure improvements during the next 7 years.

This, she added, meant that the World Cup would provide a "unique opportunity" for it to leave a lasting legacy for people in the country.

The announcement that Brazil would host the football tournament was made back in October this year.

Speaking to Reuters at the time, former Brazilian international Antonio Lopes predicted that the whole country would benefit financially and economically.

The event is also likely to trigger an increase in the number of foreign visitors, which will lead to strong demand for rental accommodation.
