Brazil 'is now the only bidder for the 2014 World Cup'

Brazil has been named as the sole bidder for hosting the 2014 World Cup following the withdrawal of a rival bid from Columbia.

While Fifa, football's world governing body, announced that the bid is not certain to be won by Brazil as it must meet stringent requirements for hosting the event, the World Cup could provide a further boost to the continually improving Brazilian economy.

Property investors in the region could also benefit from the infrastructure improvements associated with hosting such a global event, as evidenced from real estate price increases in South Africa, which is preparing to host the 2010 World Cup.

Fifa inspectors will visit Brazil in July this year to assess the bid first-hand, while seeking the required assurances from the government about its commitment to hosting the competition.

The World Cup host for 2014 will then be named in November 2007.

Brazil holds the record for the number of World Cup titles and it last hosted the competition in 1950.
