Birmingham Airport records growth

A British transport hub has reported an increase in the number of people passing through its terminals.

Figures from Birmingham International Airport revealed that during May 2008, it handled more than 877,000 air passengers.

This is a record amount for this time of the year and 5.7% up on the same point of 2007.

In addition, this represents the fourth consecutive month of record-breaking figures at the West Midlands-based facility.

The airport said the launch of new routes to countries such as France during this period has helped to fuel this growth.

Joe Kelly, acting managing director at Birmingham International Airport, commented: "We have seen another record-breaking month here and May has been extremely busy."

He added that air passengers in the region now have an "increasing range of destinations" to choose from.

According to official figures cited by Reuters, France attracted nearly 82 million holidaymakers in 2007.
