Bilingual Britons 'want to move overseas'

Many Britons are learning a second language ahead of a possible move abroad, new research has found.

According to Foreign Currency Direct, one in ten potential expatriates are studying the native tongue of their chosen destination in order to help them assimilate.

Many were found to want to live and work in other countries, which would require them to be fully versed in their language.

Meanwhile, one in three people said they were already competent in at least one language apart from English and travelled in order to remain fluent and in practice.

Commenting on the findings, Peter Ellis of Foreign Currency Direct said: "Being able to communicate with the locals is an important way to ensure integration into a new community."

He added that people considering a property purchase abroad had to take the practical impact of such a move into account.

According to the Office for National Statistics, 385,000 people relocated to another country during the year to July 2006.
