Bank of Romania governor describes currency as 'the Rocky of finance'

The Bank of Romania's governor, Murgur Isarescu, has denied claims that the country's currency - the leu - might collapse, according to a recent report.

Emphasising the resilience of the leu, the governor described it as a "Finance Rocky" that is unlikely to fall flat suddenly, the Ziarul Financiar news provider reports.

Mr Isarescu pointed out that many central European economies go through regular cycles of appreciation and loss - but this does not mean an imminent collapse of the economy.

Furthering the boxing analogy, he remarked: "[The leu is] back in about the tenth round, and has moved on to attack in the last two years. We still have six or seven more rounds because this is a 24-round match."

The governor concluded by saying that the biggest challenge facing the Romanian economy remains controlling inflation.

Mr Isarescu served as prime minister of Romania for a short period between 1999 and 2000, and has also run for president in the past.
