Author reveals secrets to buying property in France

Noted author Peter Mayle has revealed some of his favourite tips about buying property in France, with investors being advised not to "rush" into deals for property.

Mr Mayle, who wrote the best-selling books A Year In Provence and A Good Year, has said that people thinking of buying a home in France should take their time to get to know the area before plumping for it.

He told the Independent that although many may "fall in love" with France during the summer, they should return during the winter to reaffirm and "solidify" their feelings before entering the property market.

"Property may be cheaper then - if a house has been hanging around and hasn't sold in summer, it's likely the seller will cut the price," Mr Mayle explained.

He also added that enjoyment of life for people who choose to spend a lot of time in France will be improved greatly by learning some French, as the opportunity to engage in new social circles could be restricted otherwise.

It remains to be seen whether or not the election of Nicolas Sarkozy as president will affect the property market with the introduction of tax changes.
