Austrians staying in Europe
Most Austrian leisure travellers are choosing to stay in mainland Europe, according to a new study.
Figures from tourism research body IFT showed that almost two-thirds of Austrians spent at least two days abroad last year, reports Wiener Zeitung.
Most were found to favour other European countries, with 14% opting to spend time in Italy.
Spain and Turkey were identified as other popular destinations, although figures showed that Austrians were also keen to visit less established markets.
For example, Croatia attracted one in ten leisure travellers from the country during 2007.
IFT added the trend of holidaying in Europe is likely to be repeated this year, as 63% of people are planning to stay within the continent.
The findings are likely to be welcomed by rental investors in popular European holiday destinations, as many depend on tourism for income.
According to a study by Holiday-Rentals, nine out of ten overseas property owners from the UK have invested in Europe.
