Architect praises Istanbul for its 'amazing and special' sense of history
"Acclaimed architect Eric Owen Moss has praised Istanbul for its unique sense of history that other world cities like Los Angeles struggle to compete with, according to recent reports.
Speaking at the Structure 2007 Istanbul architecture fair, Mr Moss said that centuries of history can leave cities with an appeal lacking in newer global cities like Los Angeles.
For instance, in the Californian city, "nobody has left something like the Suleimaniye Mosque behind", he told Tempo magazine, quoted by the Turkish Daily News.
For this reason, Istanbul is an "ideal" city for him, he explained.
Mr Moss remarked: "It is as if the Trojan horse and Homeros live in the middle of the street among us. These are amazing and special stories. And they happened here."
He concluded by saying that although commuting in Istanbul may be fraught with difficulties, this is a problem associated with all big cities, not just in Turkey.
Eric Owen Moss' buildings are often regarded as highly sculptural and innovative, utilising the latest the construction technologies to help realise the sometimes challenging structures."
