Algarve water firm says there will be no drought in the near future

There will be no drought in the near future in Portugal's Algarve region, according to new claims from a water company operating in the region.

With strong rainfall figures throughout 2006, Aguas do Algarve stated that its water capacity now stands at comfortable levels for 2007 and 2008.

Indeed, speaking to the Resident news provider, Teresa Fernandes, communication and marketing director for Aguas do Algarve, explained that the reservoirs in the region are currently "almost full".

She added, however, that her company is not complacent about the water consumption in the region and is taking steps to improve awareness over responsible usage of water supplies.

The company has signed a cooperation agreement with Algarem, an environmental group, to identify ways in which residents in the Algarve can be encouraged to conserve water.

The current water levels in the Algarve represent a marked improvement over levels in 2005, when the area was in the midst of a drought, the Portugal News reported.
