Airport sees growth in passenger numbers
A transport hub in the UK has revealed that it has seen a significant increase in demand for flights to Europe.
Birmingham International Airport (BIA) dealt with its highest-ever number of passengers last month, overtaking the previous record set three years earlier.
Figures showed that in August 2008, nearly 1.1 million passed through its terminals - 7.4 per cent up on the same period of 2007.
This was fuelled by an increased take-up of flights to traditional holiday destinations in Europe, such as Alicante, Malaga and Barcelona.
Other popular locations included Faro, Palma, Marseille and Milan, all of which saw a year-on-year surge in passenger numbers.
Joe Kelly, acting managing director of BIA, commented: "The records continue to be broken here at the airport.
"For us to be able to celebrate our busiest ever month is a great achievement."
According to the Association of British Travel Agents, Spain is currently the main hotspot for holidaymakers from the UK.
The group recently described the European country as the "number one destination" for British tourists.
