Airport prepares for thousands of festive travellers

Newcastle International Airport has reported that about 100,000 passengers are set to pass through its terminals this Christmas.

The north-east based portal stated that the festive period was a "busy and exciting" time, as many people chose to spend it abroad.

Chris Sanders, head of aviation development at the airport, added that between Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve, it was preparing to deal with more than 10,000 people a day.

Speaking to the Northumberland Gazette, he commented: "More and more people are choosing to go away, whether it be to join friends and family or simply to catch some winter sun."

He added that long-haul destinations outside of Europe were proving to be especially popular this year.

This comes after Norwich International Airport in the UK reported that it was set to deal with a record number of festive travellers over Christmas.

The Norwich Evening News reported that facility was expecting to handle up to 23,000 people between now and the beginning of January.
