Airport 'nears opening'

It is expected that the new airport at Zonguldak will open within a month, said governor of the northern province Yavuz Erkmen.

Once domestic flights are up and running, they should be met with international flights, the official stated, reports the New Anatolian.

For the news 25 years, the airport will be run by the Zonguldak Private Civil Aviation Company, he told the AA.

The transportation ministry in Turkey shut the airport down in 2002, having cited inadequate levels of air traffic, while it was initially completed in 1999.

It occupies land totalling 1 million m².

With the reopening, the airport is likely to be a bigger success, Mr Erkmen said, thus offering a lot to the local economy.

"Domestic flights will be followed by international flights. We expect the air traffic to contribute to the economy of the region," he said.

Earlier this week, the process began to elect a Turkish president.
