Air travel boost for Morocco
Air travel in Morocco is booming as the frequency of international flights has doubled, reports ANSAmed.
An agreement about common airspace in the European Union has led to an increase in international flights and is providing hope that predictions of the country receiving ten million tourists a year by 2010 could be accurate.
Flights from London to Marrakesh take on average three and a half hours, which is only slightly longer than visiting Greece or Italy.
In an interview with the internet news provider Hamid Zhar, air transport director for Morocco, said that the boom has led to the creation of the country's first low cost airlines.
He said: "The 2008 economic and financial crisis has had an effect on air traffic but, in contrast to what happened at the global level, Morocco saw an 8.5% increase in international traffic in 2008 and in 2009 we are sure to see an even greater increase."
It was also reported that traffic was no longer concentrated in the area of Casablanca but has spread out to other cities, boosting their economies.
Morocco has been tipped as one of the next destinations for luxury travel after multi-national companies Marriot and Monte Carlo SBM announced new developments in the country.
