40,000 Britons 'own Bulgarian property'

Up to 40,000 British investors now own property in Bulgaria, according to new estimates.

UK newspaper The Independent stated that the eastern European country was proving popular among Britons because of its low prices.

For example, a new flat close to the centre of capital city Sofia would cost about £25,000 - far below the average price of a comparable property in the UK.

The newspaper also highlighted other areas that were highly popular with overseas investors, such as the Bansko ski resort.

However, brokers quoted by the publication stated that property owners should no longer expect quick and easy returns on their investment.

People were also advised to make sure visited their prospective property at least once before making a purchase, as well as to check rules regarding taxation.

Earlier this week, Focus cited research by Green Life Property Development which found that holiday homes in the Black Sea region of Bulgaria were continuing to attract investors.
