1 in 10 Christmas tourists 'go away each year'

More than one in ten festive holidaymakers go away every year, according to new research.

A survey by Ebookers.com found that spending Christmas overseas was an annual activity for 15% of British tourists.

However, the poll found that nearly one in four of those travelling abroad this year would enjoying the festivities away from home for the first time.

Ebookers.com highlighted numerous reasons for people choosing to go overseas at this time of year, with beaches and high temperatures said to be particularly appealing.

Almost half of Christmas tourists cited warm weather as their main motivation, while others said they wanted to spend quality time with their families.

In addition, many said it tended to be more relaxing than spending Christmas in the UK, as they did not have to deal with "hectic preparation, drunken antics and rubbish gifts".

Earlier this week, Lastminute.com stated that the number of people opting to spend the festive season overseas was 11% higher than during the same period of 2006.
